Our Extreme Declutter (AKA Marie Kondoing)

I’m taking a break from my regularly scheduled everything (including blog posts) because my family is doing something long overdo – an extreme declutter.

For a long time, the one thing I’ve been most ashamed of personally was our levels of clutter. That’s not a hyperbolic statement – it was really, really bad. I have a large garage I cannot walk through filled with stuff I care nothing about. It’s been over a year since we let a non-family member in our house. It’s bad.

We’ve finally come to realize that our stuff isn’t an asset – it’s a major liability keeping us from doing things we truly care about – like entertaining and enjoying leisure time in our own home. It also not hygienic – a house as full of stuff as ours has been is almost impossible to keep clean.

So we’ve decided to do something drastic – we took a week off from everything and committed to radically decluttering our home. So far, we’ve filled two dumpsters and we are working on a third. Our home is cleaner than it’s ever been and it’s actually a joy to be home now.

This is going to be a process, it’s going to take time and it isn’t going to be easy. But we believe it will be worthwhile. We are working to develop habits that should keep us from getting back to the place where we were.

On the other side of this, we hope to have a dedicated homeschool room setup for our kids, a garage we can actually park in, and most importantly, a house we can relax and show hostpitality in again.
